The General Marches On
Chevrolet, founded in 1911 by Louise Chevrolet and William C Durant, has become America's most recognised automobile brand. The roll of credits includes Camaro, Caprice, Impala, Monte-Carlo, Silverado and of course - Corvette.
GMC, was formed in 1912 by merging earler GM purchases of commercial vehicle manufacturers. Its modern portfolio boasts luxury pick-ups and SUVs as well as advanced large CUVs, for example Acadia, Envoy, Sierra and Yukon.
Pontiac, the Indian superceded its parent, Oakland Motors in 1926 to eventually become GM's performance division. Wide-track, Bonnevile, Chieftan, Fiero, Firebird, G8, Grand Prix, GTO, Judge, LeMans, Tempest, Trans-am. Sadly RIP 2010...
Oldsmobile, is America's oldest automotive brand. Founded by Ransom Eli Olds in 1897, it ceased production in 2004. But who can forget 442, Aurora, Cutlass, Eighty-Eight, F85, Jetstar, Ninety-eight, Rocket, Royale, Toronado, Vista Cruiser?
Buick, incorporated May 1903 by David Dunbar Buick, became the first subsidiary of General Motors. The division is now an important global profit centre for GM. Remember Century, Electra, GNX, LeSabre, Park Avenue, Regal, Skylark, Special?
Cadillac, "The Standard of the World" was purchased from its founder Henry M Leland (who later formed Lincoln) in 1909. With such illustrious brands as DeVille, Eldorado & Seville, it has become GM's foremost prestige (and avante-guarde!) marque.
Hummer, bought from AM-General by GM in 1998 is a modern 'one-hit-wonder'. The ultimate 4x4? H1, H2, H2SUT, H3, H3T.
