2009 Chevrolet Camaro - The Inside Story
21st Century Sophisticated Muscle
The 2009 fifth generation Camaro is based on GM's corporate global rear drive platform code-named "Zeta". This platform has been designed by GM Holden (Australia) for their Commodore VE range of vehicles, and is already serving duty in the USA underpinning the much acclaimed Pontiac G8 sedan.
At a cost approaching AU$1,000,000,000 to develop, Zeta is the most sophisticated full-size rear-drive car platform yet developed by GM and compares favourably with the vaunted Chrysler LX platform cars (300, Charger, Challenger) and GM's own Sigma II mid-size platform found under the new Cadillac CTS-V, with which it shares the same design principles.

Camaro is granted its Independence
While the advanced multi-link rear suspension won't suit drag racing, where solid "live" axles still rule the roost, its modern design with long travel, variable rate springs and complex geometry ensures the kind of ride/handling combination never-before seen in a traditional "pony" car.
Smooth progress over uneven road surfaces couple with tight control in the twisties and the ability to get all that torque and power to the pavement without the curse of axle-tramp. And it will do all this with optional wheels up to 21 inch!

"Virtually" Perfect Steering
A thoroughly modern version of the classic MacPherson Strut suspension with a pair of separate lower control arms per side, each connected to a hub assembly with its own ball joint, produces a "virtual" pivot point.
Coupled with a variable ratio steering rack and four piston Brembo brakes (SS models), this allows the driver to exercise accurate control and enjoy superior road "feel".

The Whole is Greater Than...
The Sum of its Parts. Its not how good each of the parts are, rather, the dynamics of a good vehicle rely on how all those parts are integrated. A well balanced chassis - drive-train, braking and suspension assembly - is a vital ingredient in a great driver's car.
And a world class driving car was one of the main design targets for Camaro's development engineers. Even the "base" V6 model carries all the right credentials.

Superior Superstructure
Camaro's unibody represents another step up the evolutionary ladder for automotive structural rigidity. Not only does it cocoon its occupants in safety, but it provides a solid mounting frame for the accomplished chassis underneath it to work to best effect.
Advanced metallurgy and manufacturing techniques enable the body shell to dampen out road and wind induced noise, allowing for a refined, comfortable yet communicative and spirited ride without requiring heavy sound deadening material.

Occupant Protection, Safety in Numbers
Power is nothing without control. And with so much available, its good to know that should things get out of hand Camaro will soothe - not bite! Standard StabiliTrak™ Stability and Traction Control System waits unobtrusively in the background, ready to intervene when it senses you need assistance.
And should the worst happen, 6 air bags will deploy as needed; dual-stage frontal, thorax side-impact for front occupants and head-curtain side-impact for front and rear occupants.
