2011? - The Future's Bright, The Future's - Duratec™
In recent years, Ford has been vacillating about the future of its V8 engine family. The on-again-off-again "Hurricane" (renamed "Boss") V8 range has been reduced to a single 6.2 litre offering for the upcoming SVT Raptor and Super Duty trucks. Then there was the 2007 "Interceptor" show sedan featuring a quad cam Modular 5.0 litre V8. And, for some time now, it has been rumoured that Ford would be introducing a new standard V8 for its trucks, then...

	"Coyote" 5.0L V8 - 400 hp, 400 lb/ft
	...spy photography surfaced very recently showcasing a clearly different motor lurking beneath the hood of a Mustang. Rumoured to be the new F150 base engine and codenamed "Coyote", it is an all new V8 architecture not related to the nearly twenty-year old Modular V8s. A close study of the valve covers reveals a striking similarity to the latest Duratec 35/37 V6. So expect a quad-cam 32 valve layout. One source has already opined that if you take a Duratec 3.7 litre V6, widen the bank angle from 60° to 90° and add two more cylinders, you end up with a Duratec V8 with 4.93 litres (very close to the legendary 5.0L/302 cu in capacity!) Unlike its hallowed forerunner, this 5.0 is said to offer at least 400 hp and 400 ft/lbs torque, which would put right at the top of the class of current high-output domestic V8s in a power-per-cube rating -, substantially ahead of its competitors!
	EcoBoost™ 3.5L V6 - 350 hp, 350 lb/ft
	Originally dubbed "TwinForce" Ford's EcoBoost™ V6 appeared in the sensational 2007 Lincoln MKR concept (interestingly, built on a modified version of the S197 rear-wheel-drive Mustang platform!) Don't dismiss Ford's first twin-turbo motor because its short two cylinders off our favourite American engine configuration (V8), as its maker intends to find half-a-million homes annually for its boosted motors. At 350hp, Ford has barely scratched the surface of its EcoBoost™ architecture's potential - especially if they make good on their V8 version promises (twin turbo "Coyote" for the next GT500?) 	Duratec™ 3.5L V6 - 265 hp, 250 lb/ft
	Is this to be the new Mustang base engine? Ford's new, much acclaimed V6 is a Ward's "World's 10 Best Engine" list entry among such luminaries as the best from Germany and Japan. Whilst sharing its family name with the smaller 3.0 litre and 2.5 litre V6s introduced in the mid 1990s, the 3.5 litre Duratec™ is the first of Ford's new "Cyclone" engine family, utilising the best of 21^st century technology. D35 produces its prodigious output with regular 87 octane gasoline, and emits such low pollution levels that it is ULEV II (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) compliant. All that power and clean air too!
